THOMAS R. HARPER, M.S.T. Consulting Associate
Tom Harper brings to Career Resources more than 30 years experience in the field of career advising and counseling from his work as Director of the
Career Employment Center at Nashville State Technical Institute. As Director of the Center, Tom was responsible for assisting students, graduates and alumni with their employment needs. This included
workshops on resume and job interview techniques and personal guidance and counseling sessions. During his tenure at the College he helped thousands of students in their career search.
Tom also worked closely with employers who were seeking qualified applicants. Through company visitations, he was able to see and understand
the specific needs of the employer and match their needs with his students, graduates and alumni.
One of his primary responsibilities at the College was in its Cooperative Education Program. This unique Program allows students to obtain
valuable job experience in their career field prior to their graduation from the College. Each year over 200 students participated in the Program working in a variety of environments from State government to
companies in the private sector. Tom's duties included student visitation on the job and working with companies to develop new cooperative education work experiences for the students.
While at Nashville State Tech, Tom supervised the development of a web-based service for students, graduates and alumni and employers. Called
E-JOBS, the service permits job seekers from the college to post their resume and search the E-JOBS database for job opportunities. Employers can post their job opportunities and search the database for
qualified applicants. E-JOBS was the first web-based of its kind developed by a college in Tennessee.
During his tenure at the college, he was active in career and job counseling, conducting interview and job search workshops, organizing and
conducting professional development seminars for his division within the College, and participating in the Tennessee Association of Colleges and Employers, holding several offices including President. Tom has
studied beyond his Master's Degree in the field of guidance and counseling at Middle Tennessee State University and has four years of teaching experience in secondary schools and colleges.
Tom is an avid horticulturalist specializing in the growing and hybridizing of tropical orchid plants. He manages two greenhouses from his
home near Franklin, Tennessee.
